“SPF 15” – What does it mean?

The term SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor” and refers to a product’s ability to screen or block the sun’s rays (UVB) and stop your skin from burning. For example if it takes 10 minutes of sun exposure to burn the skin, an SPF rating of 15 would provide approximately 150 minutes (2 hours and 30minutes) of protection.

A study has come out in January 2008 stating that four ingredients commonly found in sunscreens have been found to be detrimental to the health of coral reefs. The ingredients (Benzophenone-3, ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate, 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor and Butylparaben) were found to activate a dormant coral bleaches (turns white) and dies. The study estimates that 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons of sunscreens not use any of these ingredients in the Biodegradable & Reef Friendly Sunblock SPF 15.
