Acai - (Euterpe Oleracea), is a Brazilian berry historically used in folk medicine for digestive disorders and skin conditions. It is thought to be beneficial for many conditions such as balancing cholesteral levels, building the immune system, fighting infection and even protecting the heart. There have been encouraging research studies on the Acai Berry, including one study from the University of Florida at Gainesville where in a cell culture, an extract from Acai was shown to triggera self destruct reponse in up to 86% of leukemia cells. The results are positive, but should not be taken to show that this is in any waya cancer preventative, but that the Acai Berry may have beneficial properties in the body. The University of Forida is currently conducting more research on the potential of this amazing fruit.

Beta Glucan - is a soluble fiber found in the cell walls of oat kernels. It is certified gluten-free and has been shown to stimulate collagen synthesis, promote cell renewal and act as a natural moisture barrier for the skin. It is effective at reducing the extrinsic signs of aging and after eight weeks in a clinical trial, showed a significant reduction of wrinkle depth and height and overall roughness. It was also shownto have beneficial effects on the hyperpigmentation ( a condition where areas of the skin may become darker than the sourrounding area, such as age spots) from photodamage.

Carnitine - was first isolated in 1905 and its structure was established in 1927. It is commonly known to play a crucial role in the metabolim of fats and carbohydrates and is required for the heart and muscles to function properly. Topically, it has previously been used for wrinkles, peeling skin, sunburn and healing / preventing scars.

Carnitine is actually a Beta Hydroxy Acid (6-hydroxy-y-trimethylaminobutyic acid) and is able to effectively exfoliate the skin. The difference with the Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA's) and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) is the AHA's are water soluble with BHA's are oil/lipid soluble. This means the BHA's are more likely to penetrate through the oil/lipid layers of the skin and may help clean out clogged pores. The addition of these ingredients with the Carnitine creates a powerful, synergistic effective formula.

Pumpkin Enzyme - is a source of proteolytic enzymes that aid in the exfoliation process. It is created by fermenting the pumpkin fruit with lactabacillus lactis, which releases the isolated phytochemicals and then it is filtered to further isolate the proteolytic enzymes. It is an ideal compliment to the Carnitine (BHA) because proteolytic enzymes are active at higher pH's and therefore don't work well with lower pH acids such as glycolic or salicylic (these may denature the enzyme). Pumpkin enzyme was shown (through a human patch test) to have an uncommonly mild irritation factor compared to AHA's or traditional enzymes like Papain or Bromelain. It was shown to be almost as gentle to the skin as glycerin which makes it a very safe, effective and mild ingredient.
